Tim Carter, a presenter at Somer Valley FM since day one, hosts ‘Off the Beaten Track’ every Monday at 6pm. The aim of the show is to introduce listeners to exceptional music drawn from a diverse range of genres. A typical show might include a newly emerging folk act from a remote Scottish isle, a classic tune from a veteran of Ghanaian highlife, some irresistibly danceable jazz evocative of a hip New York basement club and a couple of hits by original artists who achieved mainstream success against the odds

The hum-drum and commonplace is rigorously excluded! More often than not a live telephone interview takes place mid-show. Tim’s list of past interviewees is a who’s-who of distinctive and uncompromising artists including, from the world of folk music, Eliza Carthy, Steve Tilston, James Yorkston and  Steve Knightley, jazz musicians Sarathy Korwar, Mark Lockheart and Josephine Davies as well as respected songwriters such as Charlie Dore, Chris Thomson of the Bathers and James Studholme of Police Dog Hogan. Artists with local and national followings have also performed live sessions on the show including much-acclaimed singer songwriter Reg Meuross. Feedback from listeners is always welcome and read out on air whenever possible.

About Tim

Tim Carter was born in Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire where he attended St. Laurence School. With the encouragement of his drama teacher, Tim soon began devising original plays with a group of school friends and many of these early creations met with success in local drama festivals.

In 1983 he took up a degree course in English and History at King Alfred’s College in Winchester. Here Tim seized the opportunity to involve himself in community radio for the first time.

Each week he presented a programme dedicated to the best in popular music of a left-field persuasion. The show reached a community that consisted only of the crowd who gathered on Thursday nights in the student union bar, located in the room next door. Over time, however, the show attracted a loyal band of regular listeners more keen on likes of The Smiths and the Teardrop Explodes than Wham! or Duran Duran.

On completing his degree course Tim started to act regularly in productions staged by Bath’s Rondo Theatre Company. It was about this time that he also became a member of Moles Club in Bath, giving him the opportunity to see live music on a regular basis and pen reviews for local music ‘fanzines’.

After training as a teacher of English and Drama at Nottingham University Tim embarked on a career in education, from which he continues to derive immense satisfaction.

Over the years his passion for both music and the theatre has endured. Tim was most recently seen acting on stage at the Rondo Theatre in Bath Drama’s production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Confusions.
