Database Updates

We need a small army of helpers to update the songs and other recordings in our station database. We're about to install a new play-out system and all our song details have to be updated for this to work properly. We're talking 20,000 songs, so WE NEED HELP!

Call Maxine at the station if you'd like to help.

Somer Valley FM5/9/2011: Somer Valley FM provides opportunities for all young people whether located locally, regionally or overseas. Ben Tomasino is a 17 year old High School student from Turin, Italy, who spent 2 weeks with the station this Summer.

He says, "I wanted to come for a radio working experience in England. This is a complete new experience for me because I have always studied how to make films and now I can learn about how audio works without visual. Radio is a very exciting medium."

The Somer Valley FM Morning Show

Somer Valley FM is now a few weeks down the line with a new show for families at home in the mornings called The Morning Show.

The target audience is mums and dads, grandparents and childminding professionals who are ‘at home’ in the mornings, between 10 and 12 am. Produced and presented by 4 local volunteers and featuring interviews and guest appearances by local people, the programme looks at a whole range of topics from family care, food and health issues to stories for the toddlers, competitions and quizzes.

Topics so far included are: Education and family issues – news from and about local schools, opportunities for adult education in the area and advice on bringing up the kids, from toddlers to teens, local childcare facilities, advice on caring for older family members. Home and Garden – looking after your gardens and houseplants, how to get the most out of your computer. Health & Beauty – Healthy eating and nutrition, beauty tips – expert advice, alternative therapies, exercise regimes.

"We also plan to include local shopping bargains, stories for the younger children and loads of competitions and quizzes, to get people involved with the show." says station production manager Rupert Kirkham, "All these things need researching and writing up, so there’s plenty of interesting work behind the scenes that needs doing, as well as actually broadcasting the show."

There's currently a small team of 4 dedicated local people and some others who have promised to help out now we've started transmissions, but we still need more volunteers - so eventually it can be a regular daily morning show!
