Case Study | Peter | Learning Difficulties
Peter is supported by Dimensions helping him to live the life he wants to lead. He is in his mid 40s with minor levels of learning difficulties and is in part time employment. Peter has been attending Somer Valley FM on a weekly basis for two years. Initially he underwent production training supported by his key worker who had previously qualified through SVFM with a level 2 Diploma in Radio Production (NCFE). With training Peter was keen to find an outlet for his passion and knowledge of Pop music. Under guidance from the station’s production manager, Rupert Kirkham, he made his first appearance as a radio presenter on the First Choice strand. This gave him an opportunity to develop his presenting skills which fulfilled his childhood ambition to be a Radio DJ. Within a few editions of the show Peter’s engaging quality as a presenter, coupled with a well developed musical knowledge came to the attention of the Station Manager. Peter was then commissioned with his own show. Airing in the mid morning this weekly show has become a very credible contribution to the stations diverse range of programmes.
The process of SVFM working with Dimensions as well as the personal efforts of Peter has enabled him to interact to greater levels with his peer group in the community. This has allowed him to gain social confidence. The impact of this development is particularly acute considering previously he only really interacted with children through his trusted capacity as a family friend. Peter’s supporter Mike Killey said “The fact that Peter wanted to attend SVFM’s Summer BBQ represents real social progress for someone who would not have felt comfortable with this kind of gathering a year ago.”
Peter has firmly established an audience for his show leading to a noticeable increase in status in his neighbourhood. Neighbours who formerly did not know who he was frequently stop him in the street to ask for requests on his show. In 2016 the show entered its fifth year.
Peter’s work with Somer Valley FM has resulted in an increase of his paid hours of work. Whilst Peter qualifies for DLA (Disability Living Allowance) at a calculation of £2,696 for the year 2012 he would have come off JSA (Job Seekers Allowance) with a saving to the state of £2,951 per year.
